Inspector gives Thumbs Up to Eden's future planning strategy

Council is second in North West to have its Core Planning Strategy found 'Sound'

Eden District Council is only the 2nd Council in the North West of England to have had its Core Planning Strategy found sound by a Government Planning Inspector. The Core Strategy is a key planning document which will be used to control planning development in the District over the next 15 years.

Eden District Council’s Housing and Planning Portfolio Holder, Councillor Richard Turner said: “We are delighted that following the Core Strategy’s Examination in Public by a Government Planning Inspector over several months, our future planning policies subject to certain changes has been deemed ‘Sound’. This has been a major piece of work by our planning policy staff and at full Council meeting on 31 March, Councillors will be recommended to formally adopt the Core Strategy as Council policy.

The Core Strategy document broadly addresses a very wide range of spatial planning issues for the District over the next 15 years, these include:

  • Housing, including affordable housing

  • A spatial strategy for development in Eden’s towns, villages and rural areas

  • Employment land provision and the encouragement of enterprise

  • Flood risk

  • Transport and accessibility

  • Tourism

  • Accommodation for Gypsies and Travellers

  • Design principles and renewable energy

Upon adoption the Core Strategy will form part of an up to date Development Plan for the District and will, in accordance with section 38(6) of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 be the starting point in terms of planning policy for the determination of planning applications and will also set the scene for future Development Plan Documents (DPDs), beginning with a Housing DPD on which work is already well advanced.

The Core Strategy was submitted to the Government’s Planning Inspectorate in April 2009. As part of the Examination in Public, hearings were held at Penrith Town Hall between 2-11 September and 17-18 December last year.

Eden is only the second Council in the North West Region to have its Core Strategy found Sound (the first having been Lancaster) and Government Office for North West England has congratulated Eden District Council on its achievement.
